It wasn't until Catherine II, better known as Catherine the Great, ascended the Russian throne in 1762 that vodka began to display it's trade mark quality of purity; partly owing to a cultural revival in Russia thanks to the recently crowned Empress.
Vodka distillation was no longer a commoners trade, and Russian nobles had taken to distilling large quantities on their land, using a new method of purification: Charcoal.
Today vodka is the worlds best known and most widely enjoyed spirit.

The Smirnoff story begins in Moscow in 1864 when P.A. Smirnov opened his distillery and began making a unique vodka, distilled 5 times through charcoal columns. Smirnov's vodka became popular with everyone, from royalty to peasants, but the distillery sadly shut its doors in 1914 due to new dry laws.
Political unrest caused P.A.'s son Vladimir to flee the country and he eventually settled in France, where the Smirnoff brand was officially established in 1925 and popularity began spreading across the world. In 1941 the brand invented the legendary Moscow Mule cocktail in collaboration with a Californian bar owner, and sales of Smirnoff took off.

CÎROC's Master Distiller is from a long line of winemakers and distillers, and this family expertise is clearly translated into his vodka. Whereas most vodkas are made from grains, CÎROC is made from French grapes due to the company's close connection with winemaking.
The grapes are distilled repeatedly; at first into wine, and then to vodka in the fifth and final distillation, and it is these origins that the company claim gives CÎROC Vodka its fresh and fruity taste.
