Traditionally made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane molasses into a clear liquid, before being aged in oak barrels for it's famous golden colouration, this spirit of the West Indies has an important story to tell.
It's relevence extends far beyond the world of alcohol - influencing slavery, revolution, politics and piracy throughout the Caribbean and beyond.
Though it has been suggested that this style of drink can be traced as far back as the 7th century AD, it wasn't until the 17th century that plantation slaves in the Caribbean discovered molasses, a by-product of sugar refinement, could be fermented into alcohol. From here, rum became as much a form of currency as it was a drink, entirely replacing French brandy as the preferred exchange-alcohol by the end of the 17th century.
Rum has gone through much change in the last 500 years, it's taste and colour not only a result of the regions that produce it, but also the demographics of those who drink it.
Naval and maritime use have influenced the production of higher ABV rums; whilst traditionalism in other areas has helped to ensure that production stays within it's countries of origin, with various islands of the West Indies and South American nations being the main producers of the biggest brand names in rum.

El Dorado is a brand deeply rooted in the rich history of its surroundings, specifically in the Demerara region which is now a part of Guyana in South America.
After sugar cane was introduced, colonials who had settled in the area began using this high-quality ingredient to distil rum, and by 1780 there were more than 300 distilleries in the region. Sadly by 1999 Demerara Distillers Limited was the only remaining active distillery, but their rich history remains here in their El Dorado 15-Year-Old Rum.
This rum is laid in oak barrels for at least 15 years and then blended to an extremely high standard. Rich aromas of dark coffee and chocolate, almond, vanilla and pepper are followed by a beautifully rounded palate of smooth oak and tropical fruit.

El Dorado is part of the only remaining rum production house in Guyana's Demerara region. The tradition of the spirit here begins in the 1600s with the establishment of Dutch colonies, who used the mineral-rich soils to cultivate a thriving sugar cane harvest. By the 1900s, 300 rum distilleries had reduced down to only the Demerara Distillers Limited under which the El Dorado family is produced.
Here we have their brilliant 21 Year Old Special Reserve rum, a blend of Demerara rums which have been aged for at least 21 years in oak casks. This is a really special spirit and is the highest-scoring rum ever to be tasted by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago! On the nose smoky aromas of chocolate, caramel, and Christmas cake are followed by flavours of dried fruits and hints of nutmeg. It has a long and spicy finish that you'd expect of such a highly regarded dark rum and is perfect sipped neat.
