In addition to juniper, we add a fragrant combination of middle eastern spices to our pure wheat spirit; coriander seed, cardamom, chilli, cinnamon, clove, cumin and a touch of black pepper. A touch of sweet citrus oil comes from the addition of fresh Jaffa orange peel.
This warming and balanced Middle Eastern spiced gin is a nod to some of the eccentric characters of the Georgian and Victorian eras who left their stately homes here in the Cotswolds to travel the world and brought back various treasures and flavours from their journeys – an unusual and exotic snippet in the history of this most traditional of English regions. The botanicals are added to our still (Valerie, our elegant 50-litre Holstein still in the R&D lab, the perfect size for small batches) with the pure wheat spirit and filtered water and distilled slowly to capture their full aromas. We then rest the distilled gin, before adding filtered water to bring it down to 46% ABV for bottling here at the distillery.
Nose: Lots of aromatic cardamom and a hint of cumin up front.
Palate: Rounded and warming, with sweet orange and lots more spice, and a gentle hint of chilli on the finish.
Baharat Gin makes a deliciously unusual G&T; garnish with a slice of orange, perhaps half dipped in chilli flakes for a particularly exotic addition. Or try with ginger ale for a spicy alternative to tonic.
